A cranky corso

The trips to the dog park are good. They allow Mauro to run and to burn off excess energy. Although, since he is becoming more mature, it takes a lot more work to use up that energy. And, unfortunately, sometimes young men like him can suffer traumatic experiences.

A week ago Sunday we went to the dog park. On arrival, we saw a Cane Corso already there. It was a female about two years old, with similar markings to Mauro. When we got to the gate, Mauro was whining and straining at the leash. He obviously couldn’t wait to get in. The lady and her owner met us at the gate. The Cane had her fangs bared and was snapping and growling at Mauro. He smiled and bowed and did his best “Hi. I’m Mauro. Let’s be friends.” She barked and growled and snapped at him. He offered to buy her a drink and she tried to tear the gate off so that she could get at him.

It turned out that she was about to have her period. This was obviously the Cane Corso version of PMS. There was little doubt that, if Mauro had gone in there, only one of them would have walked out. And, since I have known ladies who while in the grip of the malady could overturn a Humvee (armor plated military version), bend steel bars with their bare hands or tear a Chicago telephone book in half, we decided that it would be best to undertake a strategic withdrawal. We walked around the park and bought Mauro an ice cream cone and I tried to explain the facts of life and unrequited love to him. He was understandably upset but eventually took things in stride. Later we went back and he had a good run burning all that testosterone off.
